PRP FAQs
WHAT IS PRP?
The Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) process involves drawing blood from a patient, spinning the blood, and separating out part of the plasma that has a very high concentration of platelets. Platelets are important in clotting, but also in wound healing because they contain hundreds of growth factors. Once the platelet rich plasma is extracted, it is then injected back into the same patient's scalp, a process known as an autologous injection. The growth factors in PRP work to stimulate the natural growth factors present in the skin and hair follicles. Individual results may vary based on participation and individual health.
HOW OFTEN ARE TREATMENTS DONE?
Treatment usually consists of 4 sessions spaced 1 month apart. After a series of four sessions, we wait 3 months before doing the 5th treatment, then every 6 months for maintenance therapy is recommended. The treatment is quick, easy, safe, and effective. You are typically in the office for approximately one hour on your first visit. For subsequent visits, you will likely be in the office for about 30-45 minutes.
DOES IT HURT?
Our office uses a machine that blows cold air on your scalp during the procedure. While this air is blowing, the PRP is injected with tiny needles that feel like little bee stings. While there is a little discomfort, it is quite tolerable, and the injections are finished very quickly. Alternatively, nitrous oxide is also available in the office. You can drive yourself to and from the procedure. You do not need to be driven home after the nitrous oxide, as the effects typically disappear within 5 minutes. Afterwards, patients feel a sensation of "fullness" in their scalp because of the volume of PRP that has been injected. Typically patients can resume their normal activity without any problems.
HAIR PRODUCTS?
It is best to come in with your hair as it is normally worn. But if you do use a product or hair gel, coming in without these does make for a more accurate consultation. Please try to avoid having any hair fibers, Toppik, or other camouflage products in your hair.
WHAT ARE MY RESTRICTIONS?
There are really no restrictions after treatment. You can go to the gym, work out, run, shower, sleep, or return to work. We do ask patients to avoid hair color treatment for about 3 days after the procedure but before and well after is totally fine.
It is best if you try to avoid aspirin or other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents 7-10 days prior to the procedure. However, if you have a medical condition that requires aspirin, please consult with the physician who recommended this, prior to stopping it. At the end of the day, we would prefer you stay on aspirin if it is critical for your health. If you forget, and you stay on aspirin, you can still get the treatment done, but for future treatments, try to remember to discontinue this. Blood thinners such as Coumadin (warfarin), Eliquis, and Plavix are fine to continue.
